Dog Shaped Cake

My 2 year old son loves dogs, so I wanted to make him a dog shaped cake. There are tons of cute dog ideas online, so I merged a couple of the ideas and came up with this. I baked 2 heart shaped cakes. The tan face part I just turned upside down and rounded off the point a little. I cut the other cake in half - I guess they are a little less than half - to shape the ears. The black eyes and nose and freckles were made with a Cakemate brand black gel. It is pretty hard to get a true black frosting. I find it is much easier to use a premade gel or frosting when you need black, unless you need it to be a certain consistency.
I did a crumbcoat in the same tan and brown colors. Then I used Wilton tip 233 - the one that is often used for grass. I cut a red fruit roll up into a tongue shape. I thought this dog shape was cute and very easy. It didn't involve a lot of cutting and therefore fewer cut edges to frost. The more cut edges you have, the more challenging it is to frost.
